[Shoshone]    July 8, 2003:  Set up camp after a long ride

Yuko, Gary and Brian arrived at the trailhead.  We (and our bags) were briskly thrown on horses and we rode for about ten hours until we got to the camp site.  The views were stupendous on the ride up.  We forded multiple rivers, the first one almost immediately as we left.  Steep mountains rose on both sides and, in areas, the trail was narrow with a steep dropoff on one side.

After the longest day ever [>9hrs] on horseback, we forded one last river and arrived in a small grove of trees.  This beautiful spot was where we would spend the next six nights.

We were all very tired (and I was dying of thirst).  We still had to make camp.  Nonetheless, I found some energy to take a couple of shots as we rested up for our next effort.

[Shoshone]    In and around camp

As far as camping goes, the campsite was paradise.  Spectacular weather, tons of forage for the horses, a fishable river, trees for shade and plentiful firewood made it unbeatable.  Most days we went somewhere but not every day.  Hanging around camp and fishing or taking short hikes was very nice.

[Shoshone]    July 9, 2003:  "Fishing downstream"

Mike, Gary and I were asked if we wanted to do some fishing.  We said yes.  We rode for a bit.  Then, after fording one river, we were told to grab our gear and start fishing.  Our rendezvous instructions – we'll meet you downstream – were all we received.  The others rode off while we -er- fished downstream.  After a few hours, we did indeed meet up.

[Shoshone]    July 10, 2003:  At the continental divide

Today, we had a big ride.  We mounted up headed up to the continental divide.  (This is the spot where water on the left goes to the Pacific and water on the right goes to the Atlantic/Caribbean.)  On the way up we paused at a high altitude "valley" with high peaks all around.  The valley itself was dramatic looking.  We stopped for a break, some lunch and (in my case) a short snooze.

Past this high valley, the riding got even more challenging — up steep slidey slopes, through narrow paths with precipitous drops and over glaciers (literally).  [No pictures were taken of this segment because the ride took all my concentration.]  At the end, we were treated to some magnificent views.
